Orenda Art Works is pleased to present All Boxed In, an exhibition of ceramics and wire assemblages by South Korean artist Christine Jiwon Ra. The title of the exhibition springs from Ra's ceramic and wire boxes, which are both stark and precious in their design. Having had to move homes often throughout her life, Ra integrates the memory and experience of each home into her works. Contained within her boxes is the grief and sentimentality of having to leave a place. They also serve as relics she may carry forward into new spaces, indicating that a home is never truly left behind. Beginning with floorplans she draws from memory, Ra sews bead patterns that she then imprints into her ceramics. Her sculptures are full of twists of armature wire, enfolding personal touches into austere and bold shapes. The rigid structures are softened by personal touches that signify the memories and attachments she has to the places she calls home.
